About The Gothic Unbound

This is a collection of research images from library collections. Each album contains images of a single gothic chapbook, most of which were printed between 1790 and 1820. These works are all in the public domain. The name "Gothic Unbound" refers to the physical form of a chapbook: they were folded, wrapped, and sold with nothing but a simple string tying them together. They didn't have covers, glue, boards, or complex stitching, which is what made them affordable for almost anyone. "Gothic Unbound" is also a metaphor for the content of these fantastical stories. They are early examples of popular genre fiction.

Although these are raw research images, work is being done with them. The formal, finished scholarship is partially available at The Gothic Archive.
